Expanding Circular Dining Tables

George specialises in making expanding circular dining tables.  He has designed a unique mechanism which stores the expansion leaves within the body of the table.  The transformation is both a piece of precision engineering, and dramatic theater.  A video of one of his tables is shown below, along with a film giving an insight into the making of the tables.  You can see more information about the tables in the dining tables section of this website.

George has produced a pdf brochure which has more information about the expanding dining tables.

Testimonials

"We asked George to make us a dining table and chairs, but what we actually got was a work of art. Exquisite design, a perfect shape and fit for our space, expertly crafted and lovingly finished. Beautiful in every respect, it totally exceeded our expectations. We are delighted with it."

Val & Jeff Hancock - Durham

"George is a highly creative and skilled furniture designer / maker. He worked closely with us and came up with some really innovative designs which have transformed our space. Where we saw a wall, he saw the potential for a piece of furniture that has function, is an architectural feature and frankly has a wow factor. The design and execution was flawless. He’s straight-forward, easy to deal with and does what he says. A real gem!"

Fabian Valencia & Jeff Jones - London

"We are delighted with our TV cabinet. George was a pleasure to deal with and has made a beautiful item of furniture that fits perfectly. All of our friends have commented on how great it looks in our lounge - just wished that we had done it sooner!!"

Georgina Sturmer - Radlett

"George was patient and responsive from the outset of the bed design and all the way through making it. I was quite particular about both the specifications and the overall look and George was great at coming up with solutions and understanding the sort of design I was after. The result in terms of quality and finish were just what I’d hoped for."

Jenny Stafford - London

About George

George grew up in Oxford and Durham and was in the workshop from an early age. Woodwork developed into a keen interest, and at 17 he had work exhibited at the International Woodworking and Turning Exhibition at the NEC in Birmingham. He also sold pieces at craft fairs in Durham.

After completing a first class masters degree in physics, George decided that woodwork was where his passion really lay, and in 2005 Johnson Furniture was born. Now based in Selby, North Yorkshire, George makes furniture on an individual commission basis.
